Description of Swimming Class Levels 

 

  

Wing Buddies - Ages 6 mos. to 3 yrs. w/Adult:  An adult must accompany the child. Adults and instructors work together to develop the child's comfort level in the water. Adults learn basic safety practices for working with children in and around water. Adults and children will learn: Water adjustment & Basic skills. 

  

 

Swallowtails: Offers swimmers the first opportunity to learn basic water exploration skills without a parent in the water. Swimmers will learn: To feel comfortable in the water and enjoy the water, Supported and unsupported float on the back, Basic water safety skills, Water adjustment, Supported and unsupported kicking, Supported and unsupported float on the front, Fully submerge face for 3 seconds & Orientation to deep water with support.

 

Skippers - Beginner Level: Gives swimmers success with fundamental skills. Swimmers must be comfortable in the water without a parent in the water and have completed Swallowtails or have equivalent skills. Swimmers will learn: To retrieve objects under water, Water safety skills, Rhythmic breathing with support, Supported and unsupported float on back and front, Deep water orientation with support, Combined stroke with support on back using kick and alternating arm action, and Combined stroke with support on front using kick.

 

Birdwings - Primary Skills: Gives swimmers more success with fundamental skills. Swimmers must be comfortable in the water without a parent in the water and have completed Skippers or have equivalent skills. Swimmers will learn: To retrieve objects under water, Water safety skills, Rhythmic breathing with support, Float and glide on the back, Float and glide on the front, Flutter kick on back and front, Deep water orientation, Combined stroke on front using kick and alternating arm action, 5 yards, and Combined stroke on back.

 

Admirals - Stroke Readiness Level: Builds and skills by coordinating strokes and increasing endurance. Swimmers must have completed Birdwings or have equivalent skills. Swimmers will learn: Treading water, Water safety skills, Front crawl with rhythmic breathing 10 yards, Back crawl, 10 yards, Elementary backstroke10 yards, Front and back glide 5 yards, Bobbing, Jump into water, Beginning diving from side of pool, and Swim underwater 10 feet.

 

Apollos - Stroke Development: Develops endurance in strokes learned in Admirals. Breaststroke and sidestroke are learned. Swimmers must have completed Admirals or have equivalent skills. Swimmers will learn: Water safety skills, Coordinate front crawl with rhythmic breathing 25 yards, Coordinate back crawl 25 yards, Elementary backstroke 25 yards, Sidestroke 25 yards, Sculling and finning on back 10 yards, Deep water bobs, Dive from side of pool, Turns, and Swim underwater 15 feet.

 

Emperors - Stroke Refinement Level - Ages 7+ yrs: Refines coordination and increases endurance in key strokes. Swimmers must have completed Apollos or have equivalent skills. Swimmers will learn: Water safety skills, Tread water, 3 minutes, Front crawl with rhythmic breathing 50 yards, Back crawl 50 yards, Elementary backstroke 50 yards, Breaststroke 25 yards, Sidestroke 50 yards, Turns on front and back, Beginning diving from diving board, and Dolphin kick 10 yards.

 

Morphos Diving Lessons:  This program is available to all ages and is designed to teach beginners the proper and safe use of a springboard. Class size is limited to 10 to maximize individual attention. Diving lessons will be held Monday through Thursday for three weeks. Each participant is encouraged to progress as far as possible at his or her own rate. Thorax Water Polo: Water polo is a team water sport, which can be best described as a combination of swimming, football, basketball, rugby and wrestling. Water polo is a team water sport, so swimming is a necessary skill.
